Early Nineteenth Century Field Flowers

Last Year's Field
at The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson

Just some of what was planted.
I am in love with the blue-purple flowering cultivated plant. I can't seem to find out exactly what it is. My daughter, Sidney, thinks it is probably a poppy, but I can't find a match. Can it be a Tennessee wildflower? Or, is it an edible plant?
